How to select an irregular shape

In this tutorial, we will show you how to select an irregular shape.

Before:

      After:

In this tutorial, we will show you how to select an irregular shape and separate it from the rest of the image so you may use it in another image. We use Figure 10.06.1 as an example. You may right click and save this image to your disk and open it in Image Broadway if you want to practice it yourself while following the tutorial steps below. You may also right click on this image and copy it to the Clipboard and use the Image Broadway File > Clipboard menu to paste it in as a new image. Optionally, you may click the Navigator tab to display the Navigator window and use its slider bar to zoom in and out; or you may click the Info tab to display the exact pixel color and cursor information in the Info window.

  1. If you want to separate the fish (koi) from the rest of the image, use one of the Lasso tools on the image toolbar to mark the boundary of the fish as shown in Figure 10.06.1. When we worked on this example, we used the Lasso Polygon tool. Select the lasso tool and click to mark the border. Double click to close the outline.

  1. Use the Edit > Copy menu to copy only the fish.
  2. You can create a new image or open another image that you want to paste the fish in. In this example, we created a new image with transparency background. Use the Edit > Past, Edit > Past to Same Location, or Edit > Past into Selection menu to paste the fish in. You may refine your selection and repeat the above steps until you are satisfied with the result.
