Frequently Asked Questions (Updated for Version 6.0):
Why do I get "Disk Full" message while there is lots of space?
If you compress your backup to CD/DVD, it requires that you have ample free disk space to process file compression. The amount of free disk space needed is uaually at least equal to your total backup size. It depends on where Temp folder is located (Default on C: drive) rather than what you have on your target drive. You can locate it and change it via the Tools > Default Options menu, on the Program Options page.
If you compress your backup to targets other than CD/DVD, it is recommended that you also have ample free disk space to process file compression using Temp folder. You do, however, have the option to disable the use of Temp folder by going to the Tools > Default Options menu, Backup > Compression Options page and uncheck the Use temporary folder on compression option box. It still requires that you have ample free space on your targer drive even when Temp folder is not used.
Why do I get "File no longer exists" message after a while?
If you compress your backup, TurboBackup requires that the file contents be unchanged throughout the entire backup process to ensure data integrity. If files come and go or are changed in between, then there is going to be problem. A good example of a changing file folder is the Internet Explorer cache folder. Suggest that
you quit all programs that potential may change the file contents or exclude those folders.
Do I need TurboBackup to restore my files?
Not necessarily, you have the option of using standard Zip (.zip) format for your backup, which does not require any special software to restore it. Once you create your backup in the .zip format, you can restore it by unzipping the file using a Zip program like TurboZIP. Or if you use the Duplicate (Copy) Files and Folders option, you can simply copy them back to restore your backup.
You can also create backups in TurboBackup (.tbz) format, which store more detailed information than traditional Zip format, such as the source drive. Only in that case do you need TurboBackup to restore your data and files.
How do I set up unattended backup?
You can check off the Silent backup option box in the Tools > Default Options menu, on the Backup > Advanced Options page before you create the task, or click the Options button on the last wizard page of existing backup tasks. TurboBackup will perform backups silently without user response.
You can set up unattended backup for all backup tasks including backup to DVD/CD. For backup to DVD/VD, make sure the device is ready and there is disc in the drive.
Where should I store my backup?
If you want to back up your system to protect against hard drive failure or virus attack, it is always recommended that you keep a copy of your backup on media other than the original hard drive. TurboBackup supports direct backup to DVD, CD, removable drives, NAS, and LAN. No other software is needed.
If you want to synchronize your computers, the best way to transfer the backup file to the other computer(s) is through LAN or WAN. You can also back up directly to your DVD (+/-) R/RW, CD R/RW, floppy, Zip, and USB drives (can be multiple-volume).
I see one of TurboBackup templates is My System State (available under Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server), what does it consist of?
It consists of:
- Registry
- COM+ Class Registration database
- Boot files, including the system files
- Certificate Services database
- Active Directory directory service
- SYSVOL directory
- Cluster service information
- IIS Metadirectory
- System files that are under Windows File Protection
TurboBackup refers to these system components as the Windows System State. The exact system components that make up your computer's System State data depend on the computer's operating system and configuration.
What do I need to prepare for Disaster Recovery?
Disaster recovery refers to restoring your operating system, installed applications, and files and data. To prepare for disaster recovery, you need to first backup your System State (see Q/A above) and files and folders. To recover your system, first reinstall the basic Windows OS and reinstall TurboBackup if necessary. Then restore Windows System State. Finally, restore the rest of files and folders.
My backup dialog stays at 100% but it does not go away, why?
TurboBackup displays detailed internal file list information that you don't often find in other backup programs. After backup is completed, TurboBackup starts to create this cataloging information, which will be displayed by Windows. Depending on the number of files, and not related to the file size, this may take longer time than the backup itself.
If you back up large number of files and want to speed it up, you can use the Tools > Default Options menu, go to the Backup > Advanced Options page (for all new tasks) or click the Options button on the last wizard page (for existing tasks), and check off the Do not create a catalog entry option box.
How do I backup my Outlook Express messages to DVD/CD?
If you are doing it for the first time, select My E-mail Messages from the task list, click the Wizard button on the toolbar and select Burn onto DVD or CD in Backup Wizard, click Next to Finish. Then, click the Backup button to perform the backup. Only the last step is required to perform the same backup again, or you may use the scheduler to perform backup automatically.
Can I schedule the same backup for different times?
TurboBackup comes with the proprietary FileStream Scheduler, which lets you schedule backup tasks the way you want it. For example, on Tuesday at 2:00 pm, Thursday at 9:00 pm, and Sunday at 3:30 am.
Which CD/DVD file system standard does TurboBackup follow?
TurboBackup follows ISO 9660 standard plus UDF Bridge support. There is no need to first format brand new CD/DVD in TurboBackup. If you have other CD/DVD burning software (such as Nero) installed on your computer, be sure to turn off its Auto Formatting function as it may automatically format new CD/DVD in UDF format and render it incompatible with ISO.
Some of our users reported that by right clicking on the burner drive in Windows Explorer, selecting Properties, and Enable/Disable it in the DLA and/or Recording tabs will help to resolve the format conflict problem. This is applicable to Windows XP only but not all Windows XPs have these two tabs because it is not part of the Windows XP OS shell.
Is there security protection that restricts backup to CD/DVD?
Yes, TurboBackup requires that you perform backup to CD/DVD from a user account that has Administrator Privilege. You can grant your account Administrator Privilege using Windows User Account management feature.
If it is important for you to perform backup to CD/DVD from user accounts without Administrator Privilege, you may contact support@filestream.com for the All Users Rights applet.
Can I back up files from different drives?
Yes, you can include files from anywhere that is accessible from your computer in one backup. In addition, TurboBackup (.tbz) format can automatically put data and files back to identical drive letters for you.
Where is the catalog stored? How can I back up the catalog?
You can find where the catalog is in the Tools > Default Options menu, on the Program Options page. You can leave the catalog in the default folder. You can edit it to move it to another folder if you like. You can back up the catalog file itself just as easily as you can any file.
Is TurboBackup independent of the Windows Backup Tool?
TurboBackup is independent of Windows Backup Tool and does not require any other software to run. You can also use TurboBackup in conjunction with other backup programs should you want to. It has no conflict with any other backup programs whatsoever. In TurboBackup, you have the option whether to reset the Archive ("A") bit after backup. This feature allows you to also use other programs that rely on the original Archive bit information.
How do I back up an entire drive?
